PTFE Bearing Applications
PTFE is frequently used as a material for bearing applications when low friction, smooth operation, and resistance to various media are required. This is particularly true when lubrication is limited or undesirable. PTFE is used in various types of sliding bearing elements—for example, as sliding plates, strips, rings, washers, or sleeve-shaped components. Surface pressure, long-term deformation by creep, sliding speed, and heat generation are important for the material choice.
Why is PTFE used in bearing applications?
- Very low friction and smooth sliding behavior
- Lower tendency toward stick-slip during frequent start-stop movements
- Suitable for dry-running applications
- Excellent chemical-, weather- and UV resistance
- Very low moisture absorption
PTFE used in specific bearing applications
PTFE as a material for bushings and plain bearings
PTFE is a proven material for bushings, plain bearings, and other sliding components when low friction and low-maintenance operation are priorities. Due to its very low static and dynamic coefficients of friction, PTFE is particularly well-suited for applications with low mechanical loads and avoid stick-slip.
Its exceptional sliding properties allow it to be used without external lubrication.

For mechanically more demanding plain bearing applications as well as for sealing elements, TECASINT 8000 grades based on PTFE are available. Compared to standard PTFE, they offer higher compressive strength, lower compression set, and higher heat resistance.
PTFE as a material for ball bearing cages
In addition to bushings and plain bearings, PTFE can also demonstrate its advantages in ball bearing applications. PTFE is particularly well-suited for ball bearing cages subjected to low mechanical loads, especially in slow-moving or oscillating rotational motions.
For applications under vacuum conditions, TECASINT 8591 offers a specialized solution. The material was developed for mechanical systems used to deploy solar panels on satellites and is approved by ESA.
