CONTINUOUS FLAX FIBRES IN TRANSPARENT SAN MATRIX
Flax fibers are natural fibers that have high stiffness and tensile strength at low weight and require only a fraction of the resources needed to produce glass or carbon fibers. Embedded in a matrix of glossy-transparent styrene-acrylonitrile copolymer (SAN), the result is an aesthetic natural fiber composite with a density of only 1.24 g/cm3.
The flax fiber reinforced composite has good stiffness and strength and is mainly used in the field of automotive interiors.
The transparent surface and high UV resistance is also appreciated in outdoor applications and sports equipment.
At Ensinger, the composite material reinforced with continuous flax fibers is produced as coated semipreg (CP) or fully impregnated prepreg (IP) in widths of up to 1000 mm. These can then be consolidated customer-specifically into multilayer organosheets (OS), which show their natural surface after thermoforming or overmolding.
