TECASINT 8591 grey
Modified PTFE for space applications
TECASINT 8591 grey is a new type of high-performance plastic that has been specially developed for tribological applications in space. This space plastic is based on PTFE and is enhanced with special sliding additives and fillers. It is characterised by excellent self-lubricating properties.
The requirements for spacecraft materials are particularly demanding, as continuous functionality must be guaranteed over the entire service life of the part while under extreme conditions. TECASINT 8591 meets these requirements with its impressive tribological properties such as low friction, minimal wear and low ball bearing torque. In addition, undesirable stick-slip effects do not occur. The polymer retains excellent sliding properties, particularly at cryogenic temperatures as well as in a vacuum environment.
In addition to its tribological properties, this plastic fulfils the outgassing limits according to ECSS Q70-02 and exhibits low post-shrinkage. Other outstanding features include tight tolerances with no shrinkage and thermal expansion comparable to PGM-HT.
The European Space Agency ESA has approved TECASINT 8591 grey for tribological applications in deployable satellite systems intended for low-Earth orbit.
TECASINT 8591 is available as a semi-finished product in the form of plates up to 60 mm thick and rods up to 60 mm in diameter.
