In today's society, the term plastic is sometimes associated with a negative perception of the environment, particularly influenced by environmental pollution caused by non-recycled plastic packaging. However, the fact that plastics can also contribute to climate protection is less present. 
In the field of packaging, closed-loop systems have been on the rise for some time. Even in technical areas where thermoplastics are used, cycles are gradually being created. As a processor of high-performance thermoplastics, Ensinger also wants to contribute to closing loops for engineering plastics (Recycle for Tomorrow) and enabling products to be used for an extended period of time (Reuse for Tomorrow).

The contribution of technical plastics to the conservation of resources is much less consciously perceived. Engineering plastics are irreplaceable, especially for the reduction of GHG emissions in the course of the energy transition, a change in consumer behavior of finite resources and the development of applications that help to reduce the ecological footprint of our customers' products.

Innovative plastics and products

More than almost any other class of materials, plastics are suitable for a sustainable economy if they are used specifically for long-lasting and sustainable applications. Their production requires fewer resources than metals or ceramics, and their special properties enable particularly durable, environmentally friendly and economical products with high benefits. Our products exemplify this. In particular, properties such as the resource-saving production of these materials, their low operating weight, excellent insulation properties, their suitability for recycling and resistance to aggressive media often make plastics the first choice when selecting a material.

Resource-saving production

Plastics require comparatively little energy to produce. Their production consumes less than 10 % of fossil resources. Alternatively, they can be produced from organic materials or via CO2e extracted from the atmosphere.

Thermal insulation

With their low thermal conductivity, plastics are made to insulate surfaces and rooms, ensuring that heat stays inside in winter and outside in summer. An impressive example of this is insulbar:

Insulating bars from Ensinger for insulating windows, doors and facades made of aluminium and steel. In this solution, fibre-reinforced profiles made of plastic - the insulating bars - are "rolled up" between an inner and outer metal shell and mechanically connected - a hybrid composite of metal and plastic. Without this key product, which was developed in the 1970s with Ensinger playing a key role, the use of high-quality metal in window and facade construction would hardly be conceivable today and energy consumption would be significantly higher.

Lightweight construction

With specific densities between 0.8 and 2.3 g/cm³, plastics are particularly light and offer the best mechanical and chemical properties in terms of weight. In this way, they make a significant contribution to saving weight and, as a result, fuel. For example, housings made of fiber-reinforced polyamide, such as those manufactured at Ensinger's injection moulding plant, reduce component weight by more than 40 % compared to alternatives made of gray cast iron. This means that significant amounts of greenhouse gases can be saved per part over the lifetime of a vehicle for production and operation.

Durability and dry running

Plastics are inherently resistant to a wide range of media and thus resist corrosion and degradation longer than metal alternatives. As a result, they need to be replaced less or not at all in many applications. With additives to form a matrix of molybdenum disulfide, PTFE, etc., the use of lubricants can often be reduced or completely avoided (dry running). The risk of contamination of the environment with oils can thus be reduced to a minimum.
